The Mustafa Bello Foundation for Small Enterprise Development (MBFSED) was established in 2000 as a non governmental organization (NGO) to provide financial services and technical assistance to the low income, economically active, rural poor population for small scale enterprise development.

MBFSED is a microfinance non-profit organization working towards the eradication of poverty by creating wealth through a supportive environment where credit and savings services foster: Sustainable income generation,Job creation, and - Social empowerment

MBFSED operates exclusively in Niger State, with its office headquarters located in Minna, the State Capital. To achieve significant out-reach to the rural communities, MBFSED has zonal offices in six local government areas of the state to coordinate and deliver Credit and Savings Mobilization Services as well as provide capacity building schemes.

MBFSED has developed savings mobilization schemes that will create stable revolving fund for on-lending to productive and income generating activities of rural entrepreneurs. MBFSED operates the savings scheme in collaboration with local branches of banks

Poor rural people need access to a wide variety of financial services, not just credit. They need a range of options including credit, savings, money transfer facilities and insurance. Even the very poor need to save, they need secure, convenient deposit services that allow for small balances, small transactions and easy access to funds.

Traditional, non-formal saving systems – such as tucking cash under the mattress, buying animals, joining village savings circles, or giving money to neighbours for safekeeping – often have hidden costs and risks. For example, cash hidden under a mattress or given to a neighbour can be stolen; an animal can get sick or die. By having access to safe and flexible monetary saving instruments, poor rural people can plan for their future, provide a cushion against shocks and take advantage of economic opportunities as they occur.
