Talent Hunting

Kontagora is known as the Home of Hockey in the entire Nigeria from the 1960s till the death of Sporting activities generally in the North and subsequently in Nigeria as a whole. Kontagora used to provide the Nigerian National Hockey Team with a minimum of 8 out of its 11 players of the Nigerian National team, winning Gold Medals in nearly all domestic and International Hockey competitions.

Names like H. E. (late) Dr. Musa Muhammad Inuwa (Best known as Musa Bature), the National Captain, late Aliyu Nuhu (Bonanza), late Sabo Ma’aji, late Alh. Saidu SB, late Muhammadu Buhari, Alh. Garba M. Dogo (Dangaladiman Kontagora), Mal. Sabo Garba, just to mention but a few of them.

The MBFSED is therefore committed to reviving this Sport as an identity of Kontagora in Niger State and by extension the identity of the State. Plans are on to bring in new sets of Hockey Sticks to support all the 13-Wards of the LGA to commence practice and intra-LGA competitions with a view to identifying talents that can reconstitute the LGA Team and by extension the State’s Hockey Team that we hope may end up being our New National Hockey Team Insha Allah. MBFSED hopes that this project will spread through the entire State using gradual LGA competitions that can further expose many more talents hidden in the various other LGA’s for participation in domestic and international competitions.
